IBS

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by a group of symptoms that typically include abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and changes in bowel habits such as diarrhea, constipation, or alternating between the two.

Unlike inflammatory bowel disease, IBS does not cause visible inflammation or permanent damage to the digestive tract, but it can significantly impact a person's quality of life. The exact cause of IBS is not fully understood, though it is believed to result from a combination of abnormal gut motility, heightened sensitivity to digestive stimuli, changes in gut microbiota, and brain-gut interaction. Stress, hormonal changes, certain foods, and infections can trigger or worsen symptoms. IBS is usually diagnosed based on clinical history and symptom patterns, as no definitive test exists for the condition.

Management typically involves a multifaceted approach including dietary adjustments (such as low FODMAP diets), stress reduction techniques, probiotics, and medication to target specific symptoms. Although IBS is a chronic condition, many people experience symptom relief and improved daily function through personalized care plans and ongoing support.
